China: Pesticide Demand Strong

The total full-year pesticide output of Chinese companies for domestic use and exports will be in the range of 1.4 to 1.5 million tonnes, according to reports in the China Chemical Reporter. In 2006, 1.3 million tonnes were produced in 2006.

For the first half of 2007, production was up 25.6% to 855,500 tonnes. With China’s phase-out of several organophosphate insecticides, many manufacturers have switched to products like imidacloprid, avermectin, acephate, triazophos, chlorpyrifos, diazinon and fipronil.

In terms of quality, the National Supervision Commission revealed that the average proportion of products reaching China’s quality standards was 92.5%, with several large- and medium-sized companies achieving 100% quality.

Exports of pesticides were up 12.5% to 247,300 tonnes in the first half of 2007, with increases across all product categories. The value of exports was 14.4% higher than a year ago, at US $653 million. Herbicides accounted for over half of the exports, and were up 8.6% in volume and 16.8% in value.
