China: Soybean Outlook
China is forecast to produce 16 million metric tons (MMT) of soybeans, a 14% increase over last season, according to the US Dept of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS).
The total soybean planted area in 2008/09 is forecast at 9.3 million hectares (Ha), a 7% increase over last year’s estimate of 8.7 million Ha.
Lower than normal production in 2007/08 was due to a planted area decline in Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia provinces as farmers switched to competing crops as well as a major drought that hit during the growing season in Northeast China.
According to China’s National Grain and Oils Information Center (CNGOIC), soybean planted area fell to an estimated 8.5 million Ha in 2007/08 from the 9.1 million Ha last year.
