China’s 2005 Exports Up

Total imports in agricultural, fishery, and forestry products in China were up between 5% and 6% to US $37 billion, or the same rate of growth as was recorded in calendar year 2004. The US was China’s largest importing partner, contributing 15% of China’s imports, with soya being the largest traded commodity. This percentage is down from 2004, when the US accounted for 18% of China’s imports.

Exports from China reached US $34 billion, a 20% spike over 2004. One of the contributing factors was maize, due to China’s 2005 bumper crop. The country’s overall maize exports climbed up to No. 2 in calendar year 2005 from No. 19 in calendar year 2004.

Following the US at nearly 20% of all imports, China’s largest trading partners in calendar year 2005 were Brazil (9%), Argentina (8%), Russia (8%), and Australia (7%).
