Costa Rica: Coffee To Stay Strong In Low-Growth Season

High international coffee prices over the past few years have led Costa Rican coffee growers to invest in inputs and improved practices, increasing the country’s coffee yield. According to the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS), the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (ICAFE) expects a 5.6% increase in production in 2007/08 and similar production in 2008/09, despite it being the lower year in the coffee cycle.

Production reached 1.88 million 60-kg. bags in 2007/2008, up from 1.78 million in 2006/2007. The area planted is not expected to change significantly over the next few years.
