Cuba Close To Authorizing GM Corn

Cuba imports around 60% of its food; this year, the country suffered further from three hurricanes that destroyed 30% of its crops and caused nearly US $10 billion in damages. According to Cuban President Raul Castro, soaring international food prices are expected to cost the country more than $2 billion this year.

Borroto said similar biotech corn had already passed strict controls in Japan, Canada, and Europe. Cuban laboratories are also in the development stages of producing GM soy, potatoes, and tomatoes.
