Disease, Pestilence: Vietnam Crops At Risk
Although areas of rice with yellow stunt disease have decreased since last week by 742 Ha, about 356 Ha of Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Bac Lieu, Hau Giang, Long An and Tay Ninh provinces reportedly are still battling the diseases, with farmers waiting around for assistance. The Plant Protection Department is co-operating with local areas to find a solution.
Minh advises farmers to be vigilant and spray insecticide that kills brown hoppers, particularly in provinces like Kien Giang, An Giang and Dong Thap, so that summer-autumn and autumn-winter rice crops aren’t affected. Minh warns that farmers who don’t follow the crop seasons schedule will get more brown hoppers. Minh also recommends raising water levels to cover rice seedlings so brown hoppers will emerge and be easily seen, making killing them much easier.
