Dow Product Under US EPA Reduced Risk Review
The product has been submitted for NAFTA review, which allows simultaneous submissions to be made in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Acceptance to EPA’s Reduced Risk Initiative means that a shorter wait than normal is in store for the product, which could be available in the US, Canada, and Mexico as soon as late 2007.
The insecticide, which has demonstrated broadspectrum control of significant pests in tree fruits, tree nuts, vine crops, and vegetables in field tests, targets such pests as codling moth, oriental fruit moth, leafrollers, thrips, and leafminers.
Derived from a natural substance, the chemical “will combine a new standard of performance with excellent environmental characteristics that will allow us to serve customers in new crop segments,” according to Dow’s Don Kelley, global product manager, insecticides. He adds that on top of its positive environmental characteristics, the product has not shown any signs of impacting most key beneficial insects in tree fruit, tree nut, vines, or vegetables, and it can be applied at lower use rates than most currently used pesticides. It also is less persistent in the environment than older chemistries.
Dow expects to develop the product for global markets, and has already selected Sumitomo Chemical Co. as their preferred distribution partner for Japan.
