EU: AI Review To Be Sped Up

A draft regulation issued in July aims to alter the procedures for ais in the third and fourth round of review by eliminating EFSA’s role in evaluating draft assessment reports (DARs). Instead, EC would only consult EFSA if the DARs presented any doubts.

Final decisions on the re-registration of third- and fourth-round ais are slated to be completed in 2008, but several ais are still in the assessment phase. The EC proposal argues that in cases where there are "clear indications" that an ai has no harmful effects on human or animal health or the environment, EC should simply add the ai to Annex I. Instead, EFSA may deliver its opinion after Annex I inclusion.
