EU Ministers Approve Azinphos-Methyl, Vinclozolin

Agricultural Ministers of the EU have reversed an earlier decision and approved uses of azinphos-methyl and vinclozolin on crops in Europe, issuing allowances for the chemicals that will keep the products legal for the next seven years. The authorization reverses a previous regulatory decision.

The European Commission (EC) stated earlier this month it would not allow the general use of the chemicals because they are part of a group of eight pesticides that were deemed too hazardous to human and environmental health. The other six pesticides in the group — carbendazim, dinocap, fenarimol, flusilazole, methamidophos, and procymidone — may also win authorization next week for use in the EU.

The uses of azinphos-methyl and vinclozolin are limited to within a few meters of water courses. The chemicals may not be sprayed from the air or used in home gardening, and applicators must wear protective equipment while using the products and cleaning the application apparatus, which may not be handheld, according to the EU directive.
