EU Nixes Trifluralin, Upsets Dow

The EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health instead decided on an 18-month maximum sell-out period for the active ingredient. The European Commission (EC) has yet to issue details on the exact reason for the active ingredient’s rejection or its phase-out dates.

Dow commented that it "will be looking into all options, including submission of new data, as well as legal opportunities in an effort to achieve Annex I inclusion in the future." Dow sells trifluralin under the brand name, Treflan in over 30 countries.

Dow is not the only company to be upset by the EU’s recent decisions on active ingredients. FMC is currently taking legal action against the European Food Safety Authority over the decision not to re-register the insecticides carbofuran and carbosulfan.
