Fast-Growing Romania Approves Initium Fungicides

MANNHEIM, Germany: BASF‘s new Initium product for grapes, sold under the name Enervin, will be available for Romania’s important wine producing sector from 2010 onwards. Romanian authorization was also granted for Initium-based fungicide Zampro for potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions. “Because of the very favorable environmental profile of Initium, the products were authorized in the record time of four years,” said Roland Ringel, Head of the Initium Global Development Project. Both products were extensively tested in field trials and showed high selectivity and efficacy against late blight and downy mildew, and dissolve rapidly and dust-free in water.

Initium products are expected to be registered in the Netherlands and Great Britain in the first half of 2010 with other European countries to follow. Forecasts indicate that Central and Eastern European countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and Ukraine will drive market growth in Europe during the coming years. The crop protection market in Romania is expected to more than double over the period from 2007 to 2016.

BASF says Romanian winegrowers, seeking to establish themselves in the European market, should see improved results with the use of the new Initium-based fungicide products. The wine industry in Romania is currently undergoing major changes, and expects the products to quickly assist its move to more profitable, high quality production.

Explaining Romania’s move to be the first country to approve Initium products, Michael Hess, Head of Central Europe Crop Protection, says: “Romanian farmers want to compete successfully on the European market. For this reason there is a great interest in innovative technologies”, Hess said. “Our highly effective and environmentally compatible crop protection products will enable winegrowers and farmers to produce high yields and healthy crops with only minimum residue levels in accordance with EU regulations.”
