Lithuania’s Market Expands
22 February 2006 In recent years, Lithuania’s economy has recovered from the Russian economic crisis of 1998 to become one of the fastest growing economies in Central and Eastern Europe. The private sector accounts for more than 80% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS).
EU accession had a significant impact on Lithuania’s foreign trade in foodstuffs. In 2004 (compared to 2003) exports of Lithuanian agricultural and food products increased 24% and imports 23%.
