France: Biotech Corn Area Quadruples

Even with the growth, GM corn represents just 0.75% of the total corn area in the country of 2.9 million Ha. AGPM expects continued rapid growth of GM corn in the coming years due largely from demand from Spain and problems with insect damage.

Anti-GM activism in France is a concern, with several GM fields being destroyed last year by activist groups. Farmer groups are encouraging the government to step in and help protect farmers’ interests.
