France, Poland Pass Biotech Policies
The Polish bill does not constitute a ban of genetically modified (GM) crops, according to UPI. In effect, it creates GM-free zones, which are allowable uner EU rules, while outright bans are not.
In France, a bill that was voted down by a single vote last week has now been passed, regulating GM crop cultivation in the country. According to Reuters, the bill’s failure to be passed was “an embarrassment” for President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The bill continues to be hotly contested; called too weak by anti-GM groups and too stringent by pro-GM groups, the bill almost led to a fist-fight among legislators prior to the vote being cast.
