Guessing On Glyphosate
In our next issue of Farm Chemicals International, we are including an analysis of the global glyphosate situation. At present, supplies are short, and prices have risen by five times in different parts of the world. However, there is a lot of speculation on whether this will continue, and to what extent.
We are currently surveying a number of our readers and contributors to get to the bottom of the glyphosate situation, and from the responses so far received, opinions are mixed – some think that the price will fall, but still settle far above the old norms; others believe a return to historic prices is only a year or so away; others don’t see any price lowering in sight.
It is hard to imagine prices remaining this high as capacities are restored – more glyphosate producers will have their plant improvements in place, Monsanto itself is adding production, and new facilities up to China’s environmental codes are coming online. However, it has also been noted that raw material costs remain unsettled, and added production may only tighten the necessary supplies, increasing prices along with the increased production.
