Hungary: Ag Administration Streamlined

The Hungarian government is restructuring its agricultural administration to become more efficient and eliminate some of the waste that plagued it in 2006, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS).

Since the beginning of the year, the service, inspection, and administrative institutions for agriculture have been merged into a new organization called the Agricultural Administrative Office. This office and its countywide network will integrate the county offices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with the specific authorities for food security, animal and plant health, soil conservation, forestry, agricultural genetics, and wine classification into one organization. Some offices of of the Ministry’s research and service institutions will be privatized.

The 452 staff members at the Ministry will be reduced to 350 by the end of 2007. By moving into the 19 county offices, the new executive administration will be located closer to production areas. In total, 133 "information centers" will be established to serve as contact points for people within short driving distances.
