India: Ag Railway Project Underway
India’s agricultural industry could get a boost from government infrastructure improvements that aim to bring railways to ag retailers in the country.
The Railway Ministry recently announced a decision to lease out railway land to set up agriculture retail hubs, and has now decided to prepare a draft policy for retail chain management for infrastructure for agricultural products. The decision comes as retail chain giants such as ITC, Cargill, Filed Fresh, and Reliance have approached the Ministry for logistical support and land for their agri-retail businesses. Defunct railway warehouses and railway land would be leased out by the Railways Ministry to the retailers, who are expected to set up their own infrastructure such as inland container depots, warehousing, and processing units.
