Indian Biotech Use Grows 192%

ISAAA attributes the growth to the growing acceptance of biotech crops in India. For the first time, India grew more Bt cotton than China (3.5 million Ha) and moved up in the world ranking to number five. An estimated 2.3 million Indian cotton farmers planted Bt cotton in 2006 compared to 1 million in 2005 and 300,000 in 2004. The steep increase in adoption of Bt cotton has coincided with an increase in the average yield of cotton, which increased to 450 kg/Ha in 2005/06 from 308 kg/Ha in 2001/02, with most of the increase attributed to Bt cotton.
