Lamy To Run Unopposed To Head WTO

None of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO’s) 153 member states put forward a candidate to run against current WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy by the deadline of December 31, 2008. Lamy, who has led the global trade watchdog since September 2005, will take on a second term in office when his current four-year mandate expires in August 2009. In the first time in WTO history that an incumbent director-general will run unopposed, Lamy is "practically assured" of re-election, said a source close to the WTO. WTO’s members will elect the next chief at a ruling General Council meeting next month.
