Organics In Thailand
22 February 2006 Thailand’s market for and production of organics are both on the rise, heavily dominated by organic rice growth.
The domestic market for organics has an estimated value of US $20 million in 2006, and is growing at an estimated 12% in 2006 as GDP increases, and and estimated 15% in the medium term.
Organic growing began to take root in Thailand in the early 1980s following concerns arising from the improper use of agrochemicals. Currently, only one-tenth of 1% of the land in Thailand is devoted to organic crops, though that figure is on the rise.
Organic products in the country are certified by private local and foreign companies which rely on IFOAM accreditation to determine the crop’s organic status. In addition, the government is pushing strongly for increased organic growth as a strategic decision to increase the value of the country’s main export through the organic niche. In some areas, the government’s National Agenda on organics aims to convert up to 80% of rice paddies to organic. The National Agenda also is aimed at promoting organic crops to consumers.
