Pakistan Cabinet OKs Draft For GM Bill

The draft bill is an obligation for Pakistan being member of WTO under article 27.3b of the WTO TRIPs Agreement. Now that the bill has been approved by the cabinet, it will be submitted to the parliament after vetting by the Law, Justice and Human Rights division.

As Pakistan nears more acceptance of GM crops, the largest gainers will be the country’s cotton industry. While Pakistan’s ginning and milling sector has taken off, growers have been unable to keep pace with the rising demand. However, the use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton could have a similar impact in Pakistan as it has had for neighboring India, which could greatly increase the country’s production.
