Philippine Ag Sector On The Rise
Reversing last year’s decline, the agriculture sector of the Philippines grew higher than expected in the first half of 2006, according to the Philippine Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).
The expansion of agriculture was driven by impressive gains by the crops subsector, which makes up roughly half of overall agricultural production. Rice and maize output in the first six months of 2006 rose dramatically as a result of increased production as well as higher prices. The total area harvested also increased, and was enhanced by adequate rainfall and higher yields, which were a result of increased use of quality planting seeds. Other crops with notable output increases include bananas, natural rubber, and cassava.
The share of crop output relative to overall agricultural value slightly increased during the period compared to 2005 levels.
