Philippines Typhoon Damage Small

While farm damage from Typhoon Milenyo was substantial, farm output is expected to be unchanged, and the growth targets for the sector should still be met, according to the Philippine Department of Agriculture. The farm sector realized a 2% full-year growth last year and the Department of Agriculture had set a 4% growth target for 2006, before revising it up to 5% due to a strong first half performance.

Estimates place crop losses at US $10.3 million, with rice (US $3.6 million) suffering the largest loss. However, the worst hit areas were the Bicol and Tagalog regions in the southern portion of the island of Luzon where bananas, mangoes, coconut, and papayas are grown. While fruit harvests in the area will be adversely affected, overall Philippine fruit supplies will remain sufficient as these can be sourced from the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, according to Philippine Agriculture Secretary Domingo F. Panganiban.
