Thailand Expects Rice Bumper Crop

Given normal weather conditions, Thailand could see a bumper crop for rice and other grains in 2006/07 driven by area expansion resulting from attractive intervention prices and anticipated recoveries in harvest areas and average yields.

Rice production is forecast to reach a record 18.4 million tons due to area expansion following the government intervention price program and expected improvement in average yield in major areas where drought hit the previous two years., according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS).
