The Heart Of China

In our trip to India two weeks ago, many of the companies we met were watching the situation in China unfold. Of course, when the country that has become the world’s foremost supplier of active ingredients and other raw materials goes through such massive changes, its like the floodgates are slammed shut — and just when crop prices are driving planted areas and input demand higher than they have been in years.

There’s only so much that one can learn from the available statistics. We can report on the numbers of factories which are closing, the government actions, and some of the possible results of this transition. But, without putting our feet on the ground, it’s information without good context: the best way to gain insight into the scenario in China is to be in China, with the companies that can provide the best assessment of the situation. As one Indian manufacturer told us, it’s difficult at the moment to get a read on whether these are lasting changes, or if it will return to business as normal on August 25 (the after the Beijing Olympics end).

With that in mind, we are eagerly looking forward to this year’s China International Agrochemical & Crop Protection (CAC) Exhibition in Shanghai. The event — which already has grown to mammoth proportions over the past few years — takes on additional importance this year, being at the center of the ag-chem world. The moves China makes now are dramatically affecting the entire supply chain, and we need to get inside of it to find out as much as possible.

We’re also fortunate to be working closely with CCPIT this year to organize the Seminars for CAC. There are some very good speakers lined up to provide invaluable information on business strategy, technical matters, and just about every aspect of the crop protection trade.
