The World’s Finest
18 December 2008 The International Agri-Center in Tulare, California, US will be home once again to one of the world’s largest international agricultural expositions: the 2008 World Ag Expo. The annual event, which routinely draws more than 1,600 exhibitors and 100,000 attendees, is known for its showcase of the industry’s latest and greatest innovations. With a larger exhibition space of 2.6 million square feet (thanks to the addition of a new Dairy Technology Center and outdoor dairy exhibits), the 2008 Expo will feature products from every area of crop production. The Expo staff had the daunting task of selecting the 10 new products that it judged the very best of the best on display.
“Year after year, Expo attendees come to the show to find the technology and services to make their operations more profitable and efficient,” said Shelley Khal, 2008 World Ag Expo chairman. “These winners represent the best that the ag industry has to offer.”
The Winners
In no particular order, here are the 10 new products selected as the best innovations to be showcased at the 2008 World Ag Expo.
CropCam — PineCreek Precision
PineCreek introduces a hand-launched airplane with an autopilot which allows it to fly custom flight paths while taking high resolution color and near infrared (NIR) images. Software then processes a map of the fields and creates images which can be imported into any analysis software or be analyzed by PineCreek.
DatDots — Micro Dot Security Solutions
Datdots are discs the size of grains of sand that can be applied to equipment or products by the hundreds or thousands. Each disc carries a unique pin number that is registered on the US national database for recovery by law enforcement.
Step Gate — Towing Products/Convert-A-Ball
The Step Gate is an accessory for truck tailgates which allows safe, easy access to the pickup bed. Installing in minutes, it is out of the way when the tailgate is shut and can be removed in an instant. The step can secure both long items such as lumber and bulky items such as propane bottles or tanks.
Delegate/Radiant Insecticides — Dow AgroSciences
Discovered in an abandoned rum still in the Caribbean, the active ingredient in these insecticides (spinetoram) provides consistent control of numerous pests in many crops. They provide control of worms, thrips, and leafminers, yet possess environmental characteristics associated with biological insecticides. They were accepted for review under the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Reduced Risk Pesticide Initiative.
AutoProbe — AgRobotics, LLC
The AgRobotics AutoProbe is the first high-speed continuous operation precision soil sampler. Computerized core samples are collected to a precise depth at predetermined intervals and delivered to sample boxes in the cab. The patent-pending machine is guided with global positioning system (GPS) assisted steering to ensure accuracy and repeatability.
Irrigation Manager — PureSense
The PureSense Irrigation Manager helps growers manage crop performance in real time. The patented information system and field monitoring stations collect, relay, and process continuous data about soil, water, and climate. Growers can receive alerts on soil moisture conditions and frost events; track irrigation events; and schedule irrigation timing.
John Deere 6020L Orchard Cab — Key Dollar Cab, LLC
This cab was designed for nut growers to have the smallest possible impact on trees as it moves down the rows. The low roof height, raked front windshield, and tapered sides all help keep nuts on the trees. This aftermarket cab will fit any of the John Deere 6020L Series Orchard Tractors and is only available through John Deere dealers.
Field Water Alarm — Jacobsen Remotics
The Field Water Alarm is a digitally integrated irrigation product that alerts users by radio or cell phone when the water is flowing into his field or has reached an optimum point.
Big Tork — Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co.
The new Chicago Pneumatic Blue Tork range of products are the most advanced family of fastening tools in the industry. These air-operated, automatic shut-off tools tighten lug nuts to an exact specified torque, greatly reducing wheel-off concerns.
Hay & Crop Manager — Ag-Biz Solutions LLC
Hay & Crop Manager is a farm management software package that tracks everything from the planting of fields to reception of the final sales payments. The program provides users with complete production, inventory, and sales data, and tracks equipment inventory and maintenance as well as custom service invoicing. The software is designed to be used for all types of crops, includes built-in video instructions, and is customizable for grower-specific needs.
