Top Stories Of The Past 20 Years
In commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of Farm Chemicals International, we decided to devote this special issue to taking a step back and looking at the industry with fresh eyes. Since the beginning of the year, we have been amassing opinions from industry insiders from all areas of global agriculture — including company executives, analysts, farmers, academia, associations, and, of course, FCI readers. We asked for their takes on what the biggest stories in international agriculture were in the past 20 years, and to take a look ahead at what we can expect to dominate the headlines in the next 20 years. Through this issue, we hope to celebrate the industry’s successes, to learn from the industry’s mistakes, to take a moment to reflect on the whirlwind of change that has been felt in global agriculture, and to appreciate the things that are with us every day.
We also hope not to get stuck in the past. While it’s been said that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” we believe that an anniversary issue that is purely retrospective would not be FCI’s style. In that spirit, we have designed this special 20th Anniversary section, “20 Years, 20 Stories,” to be more than a look back.
It is also a look forward, with comments from surveys and correspondence from FCI’s friends and experts from around the world. Of course, not everyone who contributed agreed on everything. In fact, there were some cases — such as our No. 9 story of the next 20 years, “The Organic Movement” — that made the list exactly because of the disagreement and debate it sparked amongst our contributors.
We’re sure there are others that some of our readers will disagree with, too. And we welcome you to tell us why. For 20 years, we’ve tried to make FCI your magazine. If there are items on our list that you think don’t belong there, or there are things that we’ve left off that you can’t believe missed the cut, we invite you to let us know.
