Turkey: Cotton Gets Burned

Domestic consumption in 2006 is estimated to reach 1.65 million metric tons (MMT). Turkish textile mills are continuing to invest and modernize their machinery. In 2006, Turkish companies reported to add new machinery with about 200,000 spindles and 35,000 rotors. The total number of spindles in the country is estimated to be about 6 million, and rotors about 700,000.

Despite increasing competition in world textile markets, Turkey has increased its exports, particularly to EU, and remains the world’s third largest textile exporter.
