US EPA Gives Azinphos-methyl Two More Years

However, EPA has announced plans to phase out the pesticide by 2012, which is two years later than originally proposed. There currently are 10 remaining permitted uses of the organophosphate, all of which are scheduled to be phased out.

Use on brussels sprouts and nursery stock is slated to be phased out by September 2007; use on almonds, pistachios, and walnuts by October 2009; and the remaining uses (apples, blueberries, cherries, parsley, and pears) by September 2012. During the phase-out the agency is decreasing allowable application rates and increasing buffer zones. All other uses of the product have been voluntarily cancelled by the registrants.
