Venezuelan Defense Law To Affect Agriculture

The scope of the new Venezuela Agricultural Situation Consumer Defense Law 2008 will now include suppliers, consumers, importers, producers, distributors, traders, wholesalers, and warehouses that take part in any phase of the production, distribution, and consumption chain. The former INDECU (Institute for the Defense of Consumer) is now called INDEPABIS (Institute for the Defense of People’s Access to Goods and Services). No longer autonomous, the new institute falls under the Ministry of Popular Power for Light Industries and Commerce.

The law will also regulate hoarding, boycott, and speculation that may affect the access to goods and services, says US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service. To view full details of the law and its scope, please visit http://www.fas.usda.gov/gainfiles/200811/146306377.pdf
