World Bank Calls Upon Poor Nations To Show Ag Commitment

The 2008 World Development Report (WDR) explores how agriculture can grow economies, and calls on leaders of poor and developing countries to show more commitment and political will to advance agricultural reforms and realize Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Sierra separately called on leaders to prioritize the agricultural sector, and Bank President Robert Zoellick stressed that"in most sub-Saharan Africa countries, agriculture is a strong option of spurring growth, overcoming poverty, and enhancing food security."

Approximately 70% of the world’s poor live in rural areas, with most working in the agriculture sector.
