IFA Innovation Hub Launches Landmark Report to Accelerate Fertilizer Innovation
The IFA Innovation Hub, a platform of the International Fertilizer Association (IFA), has released Fertilizer Innovation Unleashed: Catalyzing Transformative Action in Plant Nutrition – the first comprehensive, data-driven benchmarking report on innovation performance across the global fertilizer and plant nutrition sector.
Drawing on input from senior innovation and sustainability executives representing organizations responsible for over a quarter of global fertilizer production and trade, the 2026 report provides a credible, industry-validated baseline for measuring progress – and a clear agenda for accelerating it.
Innovation Momentum Is Real, and Ambition is Building
The report revealed a sector on the move, with a desire to convert ambition into outcomes. Responses were scored across three dimensions — Perceptions, Practices, and Progress.
There was a wide gap between top and bottom quartile performers — exceeding 30 percentage points on most indicators, and over 50 points on several — pointing to a major opportunity to raise innovation performance across the industry through appropriate knowledge-sharing and targeted support.
Five Barriers — and the Opportunity to Break Through
The report identifies five structural barriers currently limiting the pace and impact of fertilizer innovation, together with actionable recommendations for industry actors, fertilizer companies, startups, investors and policymakers:
- Challenges in corporate–startup collaboration, including misaligned timelines, procurement processes and IP expectations.
- Limited access to field validation environments, slowing concept-to-market timelines for early-stage innovators.
- Difficulty attracting top-tier talent, as competing sectors capture a disproportionate share of scientists, engineers and digital innovators.
- Regulatory pathways not yet adapted to emerging technologies such as plant biostimulants and digital decision-support tools.
- Underutilized climate and food security investment capital.
Addressing these barriers could unlock faster development and the adoption of transformative innovations across nutrient use efficiency, low-carbon fertilizers, biologicals and digital agronomy.
An Innovation Benchmark
Beyond identifying barriers, the report introduces a first-of-its-kind ‘Fertilizer Industry Innovation Benchmark’ — an annual, standardized dataset that enables individual organizations to measure their innovation performance against verified industry averages and track progress year-over-year.
IFA CEO/Director General Alzbeta Klein said:
“Advances in plant nutrition have the potential to deliver outsized benefits — from improving nutrient use efficiency and climate performance to building more resilient, nutritious food systems. This report equips the industry with the data and insight needed to make informed decisions and accelerate action.”
The report is part of the broader IFA Innovation Hub ecosystem, designed to connect entrepreneurs, investors, and industry leaders with the resources, partnerships, and market access they need to scale impactful solutions:
- The Cultivate Challenge — IFA’s global fertilizer innovation competition, with over 300 applications across two editions.
- The Cultivating Tomorrow Conference — the only global gathering uniting innovation, strategy and sustainability with an exclusive focus on the fertilizer industry.
- The IFA Innovation Directory — a searchable database of 85+ plant nutrition startups, corporates, investors and research organizations.
