Surfactantes: Cadeia de Suprimentos, Formulações e Regulamentações

Today, without the daily use of surfactants, the annual market for which is about 20 million metric tons and $50 billion, there would be no modern civilization as we know it.

In the 1930s, however, so-called synthetic surfactants based on petrochemical alkyl chains supercharged the growth of this class of chemical ingredients, taking them into almost every area of activity that sustains civilized life as we know it, including farming.

The surfactant supply chain is built on two pillars: oil and gas and the palm plantation.

About 90% at least of the mass of surfactants comes from these two starting points. The petrochemical industry is critical for surfactants, providing such critical surfactant feedstocks as ethylene, benzene, paraffins, and sulfur ammonia, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

The palm plantations’ main contribution is more focused but equally as important: palm kernel oil. This oil comprises nearly 10% of the total oil output of the plantation, and its main use is as the raw material for the production of oleochemical-based detergent range alcohols, which is subsequently ethoxylated and or sulfated to make finished surfactants. Figure 2 illustrates.

The regulation of surfactants has become a lot more active in the last few years. In New York and California, for example, the restriction of dioxane contamination in consumer products to 1 ppm has rippled back up the supply chain for ethoxylates and ethoxy-sulfates, requiring investment in removal technology by surfactant makers and encouraging users to look at alternative chemistries.

The European Deforestation Regulation requires costly and difficult tracking and tracing of palm derivative inputs by surfactant manufacturers in and importers to the EU. This has had the effect of favoring petrochemicals in some cases.

The supply chain itself within the last 18 months has been hit with looming shortages of normal paraffins for linear alkyl benzene manufacture, favoring fully integrated producers like Sasol and Moeve.

On the palm side, there is concern now about an ample supply of palm kernel oil to fill almost 1 million metric tons of additional detergent range alcohol capacity slated to come onstream in the next two years.

These concerns were already established before the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran conflict at the end of February. Add to this tariff pressures and the longer-term megatrends related to sustainability in much of the developed world, and it is clear that today’s supply needs continued innovation to stay viable.

Innovative Trends

Innovation in surfactants is plentiful and widespread. New biosurfactants, such as sophorolipids and rhamnolipids from fermentation, have been reported and some commercial manufacturing has been started.

However, these are not the only important innovation. Biobased surfactants based on carbohydrate inputs are already commercially established and making an impact across the board, including in agrochemicals.

Companies are also working on using wood products as a key feedstock for novel surfactants, and there are even some advanced efforts to build new surfactants from carbon dioxide pulled from the air.

It’s important to realize, however, that chemical development takes time and money, and surfactants are no exception. For the foreseeable future, the greater surfactant market is petro and palm that comprise the two pillars supporting this critical component of consumer and industrial products. A third pillar, whatever it turns out to be, is some way off.
