MANA Crop Protection’s New Fungicide, Insecticide Gains US Approval

RALEIGH, North Carolina – The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved MANA Crop Protection’s latest fungicide/bactericide as well as a new insecticide.

MasterCop fungicide/bactericide has received approval by EPA for its new copper complex formulation of copper sulfate pentahydrate, delivering bioactivity for the control of bacterial and fungal diseases on citrus, vegetables, tree nuts, small fruits, vines and field crops.

MANA’s Vulcan insecticide also received EPA approval for its new chlorpyrifos formulation for use on corn, soybeans, wheat, pome fruit, tree nuts, grapes, citrus, vegetables and other crops. Vulcan touts high speed of insect knockdown with its emusifiable concentrate-based chlorpyrifos formulations. In addition, its low-odor quality improves handling and convenience compared to previous chlorpyrifos delivery platforms.

Specific to use on corn, 2011 studies completed by an independent third party researcher showed that Vulcan had faster-acting performance along with improved efficacy compared rate to rate to Dow AgroSciences’ Lorsban Advanced for adult corn rootworm adult and black cutworm larvae control, according to MANA.

“Vulcan’s new and highly-advanced formulation supports the industry’s need in placing less reliance on older emusifiable concentrate (EC) products due to the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions resulting from their use,” Keith Miller, product manager with MANA Crop Protection, said in a statement. “While various ECs are effective in delivering insect control, use of these products is on the decline due to new and pending pesticide regulations. As one of the first advanced chlorpyrifos products of its kind, Vulcan minimizes environmental concerns by reducing impact on air quality, which is an important characteristic for the agrochemical community as a whole.”

Testing and development of new formulation discoveries has become a priority within MANA Crop Protection’s research group. “With new formulations like Vulcan performing as well as or in some cases better than competitive EC based formulations, we’re determined to answer grower and retailer requests for continued use of highly-effective solutions like chlorpyrifos,” Miller said in a statement. “Through aggressive research and innovation work, we plan to launch eight new formulations of proven products currently in our portfolio by 2013.”

Chlorpyrifos, the active ingredient in Vulcan, is a widely-used pesticide for fast-acting and efficacious control of yield-robbing insects. It was first registered in the US in 1965 and is registered in about 100 countries.

MasterCop, the company’s new fungicide/bactericide, allows for targeted rates of copper to be delivered efficiently and effectively for broad spectrum disease management, says MANA. With BioRetain technology as a key component of its formulation, MasterCop’s penetration into the plant cuticle and improves performance per pound of active ingredient. This novel uptake system also enhances retention and residual activity while providing superior safety to the crop.

“As the premier copper solution for bacterial and fungal diseases, MasterCop delivers all the proven performance features that growers want from copper-based inputs, but with improved bioactivity, less stringent management and superior environmental qualities,” says Keith Miller, product leaders with MANA Crop Protection in a statement. “As a solution-based concentrate, MasterCop requires less attention to handling and storage, with no mixing or shaking of jugs.”

MasterCop provides locally systemic and preventive methods for disease control, which is one of the critical benefits of copper complex inputs on high-value crops.

“Copper continues to play a critical role in controlling fungal and bacterial diseases – especially as growers become increasingly worried about commonly used compounds having resistance issues,” Miller says.

MANA Crop Protection recommends MasterCop be applied at 1 pint per acre for annual crops and 2 pints per acre for permanent crops. Higher application rates are allowed for bacterial and fungal disease control when used according to label guidelines for selective crops.

Specific to industry concerns about soil-loading from copper-based inputs used on high-value crop acres, MasterCop’s efficient use rate significantly reduces the impact on soil-loading versus traditional copper products. The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) is currently evaluating MasterCop regarding formulation qualities and benefits specific to this topic. MANA Crop Protection anticipates OMRI certification in 2013.

MasterCop has received federal registration approval from the EPA. State label approval currently exists for Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Remaining state registrations are submitted and are expected within the 2012.
