Soybean Rust Confirmed In Iowa

The dead tissue sample was taken from a bin of soybeans harvested two counties southeast of Des Moines. The one leaf found in the bin was sent for testing and conclusively identified as Asian soybean rust; the disease is spread by spores, growing as fungus on the green leaf tissue, which is required for the rust to take hold. As Iowa winters kill off the green leaf tissue, the rust fungus should not endanger Iowa’s 2007 growing season.

Still, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship warns that growers should monitor rust-favorable conditions, and be up-to-date on soybean rust identification and management plans. First Detectors from the more than 600 member Iowa Soybean Rust Team of agribusiness professionals are also available at no charge for consultation, evaluation of leaf samples, and to determine if further testing is needed.
