Syngenta Launches Canola Fungicide To Combat Sclerotinia

GUELPH, Ontario, Canada — Astound, a Syngenta Crop Protection Canada canola product, has been approved for registration and should be available for the 2010 growing season, according to a company press release. Astound combines the Group 12 and 9 fungicides fludioxonil and cyprodinil to prevent spore germination and treat stem rot in canola due to sclerotinia.

“With sclerotinia, prevention is better than cure,” said Fernando Olea, Syngenta’s Canadian brand manager for fungicides and insecticides, in the release. “Once producers see visible symptoms of the disease in their canola crop, the damage has been done and yield loss will inevitably occur — usually to the tune of one half of the infected plants in the field.” Based on 2009 farmer-run field trials, Astound not only prevented infection, but also controlled its spread.

The new combination fungicide, which can also be tank mixed with Syngenta’s broad-spectrum Matador 120EC insecticide for foliar disease and insect control, is said by Syngenta Canada to increase yields up to 3% higher, on average, than fields that used currently registered products.
