Syngenta’s VIRESTINA Technology Targets Herbicide Resistance in Global Weed Control

Syngenta Crop Protection is introducing VIRESTINA technology, a new fourth-generation ACCase inhibitor designed to target resistant grass weeds and expand weed management flexibility.

The launch follows regulatory approval in Argentina, with additional market introductions planned for Brazil, the U.S., Australia, and Canada, according to the company.

VIRESTINA technology (active ingredient: metproxybicyclone) is designed to control grass weeds that have developed resistance to widely used herbicides such as glyphosate and clethodim. It can be applied over-the-top in crops like soybean and cotton, as well as used in pre-plant burndown programs across multiple cropping systems.

“At Syngenta, we see VIRESTINA technology as a meaningful step forward in addressing herbicide-resistant grass weeds in crops like soybean and cotton,” says João Vaz, Global Product Manager for the technology. “It’s designed to give growers another option at a time when effective tools are becoming more limited.”

Resistance management remains a key driver behind the technology’s development. By introducing a new mode of action within the ACCase inhibitor class, VIRESTINA is positioned to support integrated weed management programs and help preserve the effectiveness of existing herbicides.

“It can support integrated weed management programs by adding a different mode of action, which is important for preserving the effectiveness of existing herbicides and slowing the spread of resistance,” Vaz adds.

According to Syngenta, the product also offers operational flexibility, including use across multiple crops and application timings. The company highlights its ability to break down rapidly in soil, which may provide advantages for crop rotation and cover crop planning.

As resistance pressure intensifies globally, the company expects demand for new solutions to grow beyond early-adopter markets like Argentina.

“Our in-house monitoring reveals that growers in Australia, the U.S., and Canada are facing increased challenges from weed resistance and will also need access to advanced technologies like VIRESTINA,” Vaz says. “Our teams are working to make the technology available in these markets.”

The development timeline reflects a broader trend toward long-term R&D investment in crop protection. Syngenta notes that new technologies can take more than a decade and significant capital to bring to market, as regulatory requirements and sustainability expectations continue to evolve.

VIRESTINA technology is part of the company’s broader push to balance agronomic performance with environmental considerations, including reduced soil persistence and fewer field passes.

“It breaks down rapidly in soil, demonstrating its safety profile and reduced environmental footprint,” Vaz says. “Because it is so effective, farmers may be able to reduce the number of machinery passes needed to control grass weeds.”

As herbicide resistance continues to spread, innovations like VIRESTINA signal a renewed focus on both chemistry and integrated strategies to maintain long-term field productivity.
