Kleffmann: Global Crop Protection Sales Likely to Surpass $60 Billion in 2014

The global market for crop protection chemicals is worth an estimated $57.2 billion in the harvest year 2013, and it is likely to exceed the $60 billion mark in harvest year 2014, according to newly released data from the Kleffmann Group.

Kleffmann’s analysis is based on data collected from farmer surveys, interviews with distributors in emerging markets, proprietary market trend studies, subject matter experts and open source information, explained Kleffmann Team Leader Dr. Bob Fairclough.

Kleffmann’s value for the crop protection industry is higher than other estimates, but for good reason. The company says its farmer surveys allow it to collect more realistic data on field applications instead of inventory moving through the value chain. This product-use data captures more post-patent products being used and relies less on market share and value information provided by multinational companies.

Strong sales in Latin America and Southeast Asia continue to contribute to a strong growth rate, and other markets could be larger than previously thought. India, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, Nigeria and Morocco also had strong years, Fairclough said.

The disparity between end-user data and retail-level information as used by other tracking firms is especially stark in fragmented markets, including China and Southeast Asia. China, for example, “has been undervalued for years” and could rival the United States and Brazil for the world’s largest crop protection market. Eastern Europe and East Asian markets have outperformed the West in recent years as well. Africa continues to be a continent with vast potential and under-reported sales at the retail level.

“We are aware that our assessment differs significantly from estimations coming from other sources in the market,” says Kleffmann CEO Burkhard Kleffmann. “However, we are convinced that the global market for crop protection products is considerably higher than the previously released figures. Our evaluation is based on multi-country statistically robust farmer-based data from over 70 countries, many of them emerging markets like China, Brazil and India.”

Kleffmann’s amis AgriGlobe database of farmer surveys and product use information drives much of the company’s analysis. It will debut as a subscription product later this month via its new software platform Kleffmann4you, which will be segmented by geography, crop types, active ingredients and seed varieties.
