Mitsui Chemicals Crop & Life Solutions: A New Entity and Name in the Agchem World of Japan

Editor’s Note: CS Liew, Managing Director of Pacific Agriscience, AgriBusiness Global Advisory Board Member, recently met with Japanese executives and researchers of Mitsui Chemicals Agro, (MCAG) at his Singapore residence. Four travelled from Japan while their leader connected via Zoom. Below is his account of the merger.
From March 31, 2023, the name, Mitsui Chemicals Crop & Life Solutions, Inc. (MCLS) will enter the crop protection world. This follows the merger and re-organization of Mitsui Chemicals Agro, Inc. (MCAG), a wholly-owned of subsidiary of Mitsui Chemicals Inc., and the crop protection business of Meiji Seika Pharma Co. Ltd, called MMAG Co. Ltd.
MCAG acquired MMAG back in January 2022.
Meiji Seika Pharma’s agrochemical business, like that of MCAG’s, centers around R&D and focuses on discovery of crop protection products that not only help solve pest and disease problems but minimizes environmental impact as well. Key products include Probenazole, the world’s first systemic acquired resistance type fungicide, Glufosinate-P, a novel non-selective herbicide and Flupyrimin, an insecticide that is safe for bees and other pollinators.
The creation of MCLS will result in good synergies. The market penetration of MMAG’s product range in the domestic and global markets will be enhanced via the MCAG network while MCAG will benefit from the R&D capabilities of MMAG with additional bandwidth and therefore widening the product range of MCAG in the near future.
This merged company, MCLS, will significantly bolster the objective and corporate goal of Mitsui Chemicals in becoming a major player in the global crop protection markets while having sustainable agriculture and food production in mind.
This update on the creation of Mitsui Chemicals Crop & Life Solutions Inc. (MCLS) was given to Pacific Agriscience Pte Ltd. in Singapore on February 24, 2023 by four visiting executives of the combined entity with their team leader in Tokyo hooking up via computer.
