Mozambique Offers Enormous Opportunity for New Technologies

The two decades since the end of the civil war in Mozambique have seen a rise in GDP and per capita income. According to FAO statistics, the per capita food supply continues to grow even as malnutrition remains high. As the agricultural industry in the country continues to develop, there is opportunity for exponential growth for new technologies.

The government of Mozambique, working with the FAO recently announced the banning of 79 highly hazardous pesticides in favor of lower risk pesticides including biopesticides.

Over the past 10 years, the average annual volume of pesticide imports into Mozambique has increased by 500 percent, according to the FAO. Agricultural pesticides are used mainly on cash crops like cashew, tobacco, sugar cane, cotton, banana and vegetables. The annual value of pesticide sales is about $16.6 million. As the agricultural market continues to grow, the country offers crop input companies enormous opportunity.
