New Molecule Pipeline: A Look at the Crop Protection Products Currently or Soon-to-Be Available

Agricultural companies such as BASF, Bayer, Corteva, and Syngenta are continuously developing and introducing new products and systems to address the challenges faced by growers in the agriculture industry, writes Douglas Guth in a recent issue of AgriBusiness Global DIRECT. These advancements aim to tackle climate challenges, comply with new regulatory requirements, combat crop-specific pests, and meet rising consumer expectations.

BASF, for instance, recently launched several weed management products that offer innovative herbicide modes of action for various crops. These products help safeguard crops from insects, diseases, and other pressures that can negatively impact both growers and consumers. One of their notable products is an L-glufosinate ammonium (L-GA) herbicide formulation that significantly reduces the amount of active ingredient required by farmers. This not only saves on operating costs but also promotes more sustainable distribution and application methods.

In addition to weed management, BASF is also focused on improving rice yield outcomes in the Asia-Pacific region. They have developed a new insecticide mode of action (MoA) specifically for rice hopper control. This herbicide formulation, called Kixor CS, can be applied from plant pre-emergence to early-post, providing flexibility throughout the growing season.

Furthermore, BASF is preparing to release Axalion Active, an MoA that protects harvests from a broad spectrum of piercing and sucking pests. They have also developed Revysol Active, which has demonstrated market-leading control of diseases in cereal, soybean, and corn crops.

Corteva, on the other hand, is investing in advanced chemical opportunities such as Reklemel, a synthetic nematicide that is beneficial to soil organisms. They have also introduced Adavelt, a disease-controlling fungicide for various fruits and vegetables. Adavelt has already been commercially available in Canada, South Korea, and Australia since this year.

Syngenta has developed TYMIRIUM technology, which provides long-lasting protection against highly destructive nematodes and soil-borne diseases, particularly the Fusarium species. This technology has received regulatory approval in Argentina.

Looking ahead, Bayer is planning to release Plenexos in 2024, an insecticide effective against aphids, white flies, and other sucking pests. This foliar- and soil-applied insecticide will provide growers with an effective solution to combat these pests.

These advancements in chemical crop protection offer growers a strong pipeline of products and systems to address the challenges they face. By utilizing these innovative solutions, growers can protect their crops from pests, diseases, and other pressures, ensuring a sustainable and productive agricultural industry.
