Pioneering Brazilian Agronomist Passes Away

Agronomist Carlos Alves de Seixas. a pioneer in the country’s crop protection industry, passed away at the age of 100 last week.

Seixas worked for the Biological Institute, in São Paulo, which was involved in the discovery of the chemical environment of the coffee berry borer control, a plague which significantly damaged the coffee and the national economy in the 1940s. He led the successful operation that fought and controlled the outbreak of locusts in Sorocabana Ages and in the north of Paraná. In addition, the instituted helped pioneer the practice of agricultural aviation with air coating material in coffee plantations.
