Ugandan Cotton Farmers Question Government Tactics

The Ugandan government has proposed a new fund for cotton price stabilization to aid the Ugandan cotton industry, potentially creating more liquidity for growers to utilize better crop inputs, including crop protection. But growers and ginners are skeptical of how the money will be used, according to

Ugandan cotton farmers and ginners are voicing their opinions after the government proposed new measures to stabilize cotton prices.

For the past two years, Uganda’s government has been taking a percentage of cotton sales and filtering it into a fund geared toward stabilizing fluctuating prices. It is supposed to pay back farmers and ginners if there is a significant price drop, but it has been insufficient in providing relief from price fluctuations.

Cotton farmers and ginners are alleging that funds are already being misappropriated. According to AllAfrica.com, one farmer says the money was used to buy tractors, seeds and other inputs instead of going back to farmers and ginners.
