Mexico: Cotton Increase Expected

Mexico is forecast to increase cotton production by 59,000 bales in 2008/09 vs. 2007/08, a 9.5% year-on-year increase.

According to the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS), the forecast 680,000 bale crop is due to an expansion in harvested area in response to higher international cotton prices.

The Confederation of Mexican Cotton Associations (CMCA) said that many growers considered planting other high-priced commodities, such as corn or wheat, but that despite the strong prices for these crops, preliminary cotton planting intentions show that many farmers are wary to plant more input-intensive crops due to the rising costs of inputs (mostly fuel and fertilizer).

CMCA also estimates that approximately 70,000 hectares of cotton will be planted with genetically modified seed varieties in 2008/09, an increase of about 17% over last year.
