The Regulation And Approval Of Pesticides In Mexico

Rocio Alatorre Eden-Wynter, federal commissioner with COFEPRIS, Mexico’s pesticide regulatory and approval agency, outlined the procedure and cost for registering pesticides in Mexico during the opening session of the FCI Trade Summit. The keynote address discussed the definition of pesticides under Mexican Law, and the categorization of pesticides that guides the Mexican regulatory process. She emphasized that the commission and its policies are continually evolving to improve the decision making process and ensure the continued progress of the Mexico’s people and its growing agricultural industry.

Highlights of Alatorre’s presentation included on overview of registration data requirements relating to physical properties and human and eco-toxicology as well as a summary of registration costs for each of the four toxicological categories established by the commission. Near the end of her presentation, Alatorre spoke of the commission’s goal to introduce a new organic program in 2011.

“Organic agriculture is a key growth area for Mexico, and the current regulatory process does not provide for a unique path for those products used in organic production,” she said. “We are working hard to change that.”

Alatorre concluded by offering attendees her assurance that the agrochemical industry is an important part of Mexico’s future. “Some might suggest that registration of pesticides in Mexico is more difficult today than in the past.” She said. “First and foremost, changes are designed to actively manage risks. But we are very interested in the manufacturing, formulating and registration of chemicals that are of the highest level of quality.”
