India: PMFAI Successfully Defends Profenofos, Quinalphos and Phenthoate at Rotterdam Convention’s CRC-22 Meeting
The Pesticide Manufacturers & Formulators Association of India (PMFAI) is pleased to announce a significant positive outcome following the Twenty-second meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC-22) of the Rotterdam Convention, held in Rome from September 15 to 18, 2026.
Ahead of the meeting, PMFAI formed dedicated Task Force Groups comprising industry experts to mount a robust defense for three vital pesticide molecules slated for review: Profenofos, Phenthoate, and Quinalphos. Comprehensive technical submissions were duly presented to the relevant Ministries of the Government of India as well as the Rotterdam Convention Secretariat.
Through a coordinated and effective representation with Government of India, specifically involving the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare – alongside the PMFAI delegation led by Dr. K.N. Singh (Gharda Chemicals Ltd) and Dr. Samir Dave (AIMCO Pesticides Ltd.), the Indian agrochemical industry successfully defended the molecules at Rome.
Key Outcomes of CRC-22:
- Profenofos: Consideration of the notification submitted by Malaysia was deferred, with the Bureau tasked to decide on its inclusion in a future meeting agenda.
- Quinalphos: Upon detailed review of the notification for final regulatory action, the committee concluded that no notifications met the necessary criteria for listing at this stage.
- Phenthoate: Similarly, upon reviewing the final regulatory action notification, no notifications were found to meet the criteria.
PMFAI remains committed to safeguarding safe generic products at international forums like Rotterdam, Stockholm and Basel Conventions, thereby safeguarding the interests of the Indian agrochemical manufacturing and formulation industry through science-based advocacy, continuous dialogue, and collaborative engagement with regulatory authorities globally.
