India Ranks 66th in Food Security Index

The 2012 Global Food Security Index, developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned by DuPont, ranks 105 countries in accordance with their relative level of food security in three categories — affordability, availability and quality & safety.

India ranked 66th on the list, ahead of Pakistan (ranked 75), but below China (ranked 39). Of the three categories, India ranks slightly higher in “availability” than “affordability” and “quality and safety.”

By 2030, India is going to be the most populous country in the world. To ensure food security of this mammoth population is a challenging task. As per the report, high levels of poverty, low income, less spending on farm research, poor infra-structure, less availability of proteins are some of the key challenges India has to face.
