South Korea Helps Found Global Ag Assistance Program

SEOUL, South Korea — Malaysian National News Agency Bernama reports that South Korea has helped launch a $1 billion Global Agriculture and Food Security Program, according to government officials. The global food security program, with the goal of improving agricultural productivity and reducing unfair practices that inhibit competition in ag production in developing countries, was first proposed at the Group 20 economic summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US, in Sept. 2009. As the founding donor, South Korea has contributed $50 million to the program, which is to be managed by the World Bank, the United Nations and other international bodies, said the country’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance, Yoon Jeung-hyun. South Korean officials will be part of the program’s steering committee.

South Korea will chair the Nov. 2010 G-20 meeting.
