France Fined US $13 Million Over GM Law

Said the ECJ: “The unlawful conduct repeatedly engaged in by France in the GM sector is of such a nature as to require the adoption of a dissuasive measure.”

This is the second time the ECJ has ruled against France for failing to update the country’s laws on GM crops and food. The last time was in November 2003. The highly controversial bill was blocked several times during its passage through the French parliament due to considerable public opposition to GM crops. The rules in the directive, which the European Commission issued in 2001, regulate how GM crops are grown for crop or seed production, how they are imported for use in food and feed and how they are approved in the EU.
