BASF Announces Glyphosate-Resistant Crop Solution

BASF Canada announced that the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has registered OPTILL herbicide on soybeans for the 2013 season. This tool will be particularly well received with growers of glyphosate-tolerant soybeans.

OPTILL is a pre-plant soybean herbicide that BASF says has a fast burndown and optimal residual weed control of grass and broadleaf weeds. Pre-registration trial results for OPTILL show a yield increase of two to three bushels per acre compared to bushels using glyphosate alone.

“OPTILL allows growers to achieve their maximum yield, regardless of whether they’re running vertical tillage or no-till operations,  it’s a great fit,” says Joel Johnson, Brand Manager, Herbicides at BASF Canada. “It provides a clean start, with greater control of dandelions and grassy weeds from planting through to early crop development. Even in situations with heavy crop residue, it provides good residual activity.”

Tank-mixed with glyphosate, OPTILL is a premix dry formulation of KIXOR and imazethapyr (Group 14 and Group 2) that uses multiple modes of action to control a broad spectrum of weeds in glyphosate-tolerant soybeans.

Kixor is a potent inhibitor of chlorophyll biosynthesis, resulting in a buildup of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation of the cellular membranes. This drives a rapid loss of membrane integrity, leading to cellular leakage and rapid weed death.

The herbicide is readily absorbed by plant roots, shoots and leaves. Once absorbed, it is predominantly translocated via the xylem, with some movement in the phloem.

Kixor herbicide technology is the first in North America in the class of chemistry known as pyrimidinedione. It was designed with a novel side chain meaning it is readily metabolized by tolerant crops, which leads to crop safety. The side chain also imparts chemical properties that result in soil bioavailability and foliar activity that enhance weed control.
